Who We Are Are

The National Tenants’ Union of Ghana (NATUG) stands as the authoritative and unified voice for tenants across all sixteen regions of our nation. Established with the singular purpose of championing tenants’ rights, promoting fair and transparent housing practices, and empowering our members with essential resources and support, NATUG represents millions of households from Accra to Tamale, from Kumasi to Takoradi, and everywhere in between.

Our union was founded on the recognition that Ghana’s rapid urbanization and growing housing demand have created unprecedented challenges for tenants. Rising rental costs, unclear tenancy agreements, discriminatory practices, and lack of legal recourse have left many Ghanaian families vulnerable and voiceless. NATUG emerged to fill this critical gap, providing not just advocacy but practical support, legal guidance, and a platform for collective action.

We work tirelessly to ensure that every tenant4regardless of income level, regional location, or social status4has access to the information, resources, and representation they need to secure and maintain quality housing. Through partnerships with government agencies, civil society organizations, legal experts, and housing advocates, we are transforming Ghana’s rental landscape one tenant, one community, and one policy reform at a time.

A fair, inclusive, and equitable housing system where every tenant in Ghana enjoys safe, secure, and affordable accommodation, protected by law and empowered to shape housing policies.

Four-Year Implementation Roadmap

Year 1 (2026)

Foundation Phase

Focus: Establishing national presence, building operational systems, launching baseline programs

  • Set up National Secretariat and 3 regional offices (Greater Accra, Ashanti, Western)
  • Launch “1 Million Tenants Campaign” and membership database
  • Conduct 50 community awareness workshops
  • Publish inaugural “State of Tenants in Ghana” report
  • Create tenant helpdesk and train 100 community volunteers

Year 2 (2027)

Expansion Phase

Focus: Strengthening outreach, expanding services, aggressive policy engagement

  • Launch NATUG School of Tenancy Education with comprehensive curriculum

  • National petition campaign to end 2-5 year rent advance requirements

  • Establish first NATUG ADR Centre with trained mediators

  • Deploy digital governance system for case management and membership

  • Resolve 300 landlord-tenant disputes through mediation

Year 3 (2028)

Consolidation Phase

Focus: High-impact national programs, deep partnerships,scaled presence

  • Launch annual National Tenant Week celebration

  • Produce quarterly NATUG Housing Bulletin and tenant documentaries

  • Submit draft Rent Act amendment proposals to Parliament

  • Open regional ADR desks in 6 additional regions

  • Establish social enterprise: LATMAC (Landlord-Tenant Mediation & Arbitration Centre)

Year 4 (2029)

Impact Scaling Phase

Focus: Legislative reform, national recognition, institutionalized programs

  • Drive major policy reforms: rent control digitalization, landlord licensing, reduced advances

  • Organize National Housing Policy Summit with government and private sector

  • Launch NATUG e-learning platform for tenants and landlords

  • Create Tenant Justice Fund for vulnerable populations

  • Achieve presence in all 16 regions, mediating 1,000+ cases annually
